WHY DO WE HAVE TO DO LOGS?
The DOT Motor Carrier Safety Regulations require drivers to make and maintain a driver's daily log (record of duty status).

Remember that the logs that you fill out are Legal documents, both you and we are bound by what you record on the Logs, Make them clear, neat and legible.

When Do I have to Fill out my Logs?
Logs should be filled out Daily and not necessarily at the end of a day. A reasonable answer to this you must have your logs completed through your last change of duty status.. No Exceptions.
When Do I Have to Send In My Logs?
The Log shall be prepared in duplicate, the original to be turned over to the motor carrier and the copy retained by the driver.  When the driver is on duty, logs for the current day plus for the previous seven (7) days must be in your possession.

Prepare a log for each and every day of the year.  Even if the driver is off duty the log should reflect that status by showing a single line from left to right reflecting the off duty status.

Logs Originals are to be into Monroe no later than 13 days after the date on the log.  That's the Federal rule. Can I send them in sooner, Of Course.

Take today's date, subtract 13 and that is the Log date that must already be in Monroe. 

Here's an example:

Today is Friday, March 28,... 28 minus 13 = 15

Logs should be in Monroe through March 15. 

One Final Note, The above deadlines are for complete, correct Logs.

 

What Happens if I am Late with my Logs?
 

If Logs are not received in Monroe by the designated Date, you will be placed on "OUT OF SERVICE" Status and  will not be allowed to drive for Harris Transport, LLC until your Logs are brought up to Date.

 

How do I fill Out a Log?
The First Section of a log that is required to be completed is on the Front:

The top portion of the Driver's Daily Log must be filled out completely and legibly on each log.

Item/ Field Instructions for Completion
Date The month, day and year to which the log pertains
Name of Carrier and the Main Office Address The Name of the Carrier must be exact,  No abbreviations, initials or other similar incomplete identification are acceptable.  The city and state are sufficient for the address and the state may be abbreviated
Home Terminal Address The terminal or location to which the driver is assigned, reports to or works out of; it is a designation by the carrier (this information is not required) 
Vehicle Numbers The number of the truck or tractor and semi-combinations operated during the 24 hour period outlined on the specific log.
Driver's Signature Write (Do not Print) the driver's full name, that is the first name, middle initial, and last name as it appears on legal identification such as Driver's License, Payroll and so forth.  Do not abbreviate or use nicknames.  The Driver should remember that when a log is signed, he/she certifies the the information on the log is true and correct.  Remember this is a federal document.
Name of Co-Driver Write or print the initials and the last name of the co-driver.  You may wish to use the first name and middle initial but this is not necessary.
Total Miles Driven Today The actual miles the driver preparing the log drove during the 24 hour period of the log.
Total Miles Today The total miles of the vehicle involving a two driver team operation.  The driver preparing the log will enter the miles driven for the day as indicated above and then the total miles for the vehicle (during the 24 hours of the log) as Total Miles Today.

 

Duty Section

Off Duty The Period of time the driver is off duty and has no responsibility to the carrier, the equipment or the cargo.
Sleeper Berth The time that the driver spends resting in the Sleeper Berth
Driving Time The time that the driver spends driving the motor vehicle
On-Duty (Not Driving) All the time the driver spends on duty other than driving the motor vehicle, and is responsible for the equipment and/or cargo.

Of the above, the most important section is the third, driving time, and the three on-duty 

rules that follow must be considered.

Rule #1

The 11 Hour Rule

 

The 11 Hour Rule states that a driver may not drive a Commercial Motor Vehicle for more than 11 cumulative hours following 10 hours of consecutive off duty.

It does not make any difference whether the time over 11 hours is one hour or twenty hours, the over time is a violation.

There is one exception: this exception is allowed for adverse conditions. Adverse conditions include fog, weather situations and other similar circumstances.  However, adverse conditions must meet two criteria: the conditions must not have been known when the load was dispatched and the normal completion time for the load could have been no more than 11 hours.  Under these conditions the driving time is extended by three hours to fourteen hours before requiring ten hours of rest. However before you consider this exception you had better be right.

Drivers with sleeper berths also have an ability to adjust their driving and sleeping schedule.  the rules say that a driver with a sleeper may break the required ten hours of rest into two periods instead of one, provided no single period is less than two hours long, and there is a preceding 10 hour period of off duty.   Doing this, however,  requires careful attention to the next two rules and it is very easy to make a mistake and cause a violation.

Rule #2

The 14 Hour Rule

The 14 hour Rule states that the driver may not drive a Commercial Motor Vehicle after the end of the 14th consecutive hour on duty after 10 consecutive hours off duty.  Note that the Rule includes all "on Duty" time and not just Driving time. "On Duty" Time includes just about everything except 

 

Rule #3

The 70 Hour Rule

Harris/Harris operates Seven Days a week so drivers are covered under the 70 hour Rule.  The 70 hour Rule states that over a period of eight days a driver may not log more than 70 hours of total on-duty time.  On duty time includes both Line 3-driving time, and line 4-On Duty not driving, time.

The 70 hour rule is continuous and always includes the last eight days

To calculate available hours for the upcoming day, consider only the last seven days.

Finally, all of these rules apply to your situation at the same time.  That means you must satisfy the 11 , 14 and 70 Hour Rules at the same time.

Remarks Section

 

Information required in the Remarks Section is minimal but must include at least the city (full spelling , no abbreviations), and state in which each change of duty status occurs

The second section of a log that is required to be filled out is on the back.  This is the section reserved for the Pre Trip Inspection. Drivers are required to do a Pre Trip inspection each Day and to record the results of that inspection on the Drivers Daily Log.

What Happens to the Log Information at Monroe?
 

When Your Logs are received in Monroe, they are sorted by date and the information entered in to a Log Monitoring Computer Program.

The Results of This Process are:

  1. Violations Reports for Hours of Service and other Log Errors are Generated.
  2. Hours of Service will be compared to Trip Reports, Fuel Receipts and Dot Checks for accuracy.
  3. Information about Dot Checks and Drug Tests, Accidents and any other information will be compared to the Logs.

 

What Happens if there is an Error on My Logs?
 

If Simple Errors are found on the log you will be contacted and the log will be returned to you to make the correction.  If the corrected logs are not returned in a reasonable time limit the error will also become a violation.

The Correction must be in writing and signed by you.  We cannot make corrections on any Logs. when you have completed your corrections the corrected copy must be returned to Monroe.

 

What Happens if there is a Violation on My Log?
 
  1. All Violations will be reported to you in Writing
  2. After six Violations you will have to attend Log School in Monroe for Remedial Training.
  3. After Six Additional Violations You will have to attend Log School again 
  4. After Six More Violations you will have to attend Log School a third time
  5. Finally after an Additional six violations, you will be declared unfit to Drive for Harris Transport, LLC.
